Women's Studies
at the University of Turku

Dancing with the fishes

The Centre for Women’s Studies at the University of Turku is a unit under the Faculty of Humanities and its Department of Art, Literature and Music. The special focus of the Centre is on humanities - aesthetic subjects, history, cultural studies.

The Centre for Women's Studies was founded in 1995 but courses in Women's Studies have been taught since the mid 80s. The programme in Women's Studies aims at an interdisciplinary approach in both teaching and research. The aim is to give students a broad knowledge of feminist methodology and theory. The programme focuses on Nordic (Scandinavian) women, dealing with historical perspectives and with current issues. The fields of research are in cultural and social studies.

The Centre co-operates with The Institute of Women's Studies at Åbo Akademi University in planning courses in English which then are open to students from both universities. Despite this, exchange students of Turku University who attend courses at The Institute of Women's Studies at Åbo Akademi University, must register as students at Åbo Akademi University separately. Please note also that due to poor resources, The Centre for Women's Studies at the University of Turku is unable to offer English-language teaching at the moment. See our Basic Studies Programme for Exchange Students for information about studies in English, which are all individual study based in the academic year 2005-2006.

If you want to know more about women and Women's Studies in Finland, The Christina Institute for Women´s Studies at the University of Helsinki offers some good links in English.
