Turku/Åbo Degree Students Exchange and International Students Note for Old Curriculum Students Teaching Program, 2006-2007 Classes Offered Every Year: Autumn Semester An Introduction to the United States class with required reading, graded by examination (4 op) + term paper or additional book examination (4 op) (obligatory class for degree students taking NAMS as a minor) Ellen Valle, English (Juslenia) Wednesdays 16-18, lecture room II (University Main Building) Starting Wed 12.9.2007, at 16:00 The topics covered in the class include the following: * Historical background and the construction of an American identity * Contemporary American society * Cultural studies (‘popular’ and ‘high’ culture, especially literature and the media) * America as other: European images of America at various times The class consists of two components: * Lecture course and required reading, followed by exam (4 op) * Independent paper (4000-5000 words), on a topic chosen and defined by the student (4 op) Course reading: Russell Duncan and Joseph Goddard (2005): Contemporary America. 2nd revised edition. Palgrave/Macmillan. Students taking this class are also normally expected to attend the American Voices seminar (Friday 20 - Saturday 21 October), and to submit a written report on this (1 op). Classes Offered Every Year: Spring Semester The Making of Canada (see below) class with required reading, graded by examination (4 op) + term paper or additional book examination (4 op) Usually taught on Wednesday afternoons 16-18 This class is obligatory for students taking North American Studies to Intermediate level, but may also be used as a Basics elective for students completing only the Basic Studies level. Keith Battarbee, English (Juslenia) Interdisciplinary seminar (10 op) For this seminar, students propose a North American topic of their own choice which involves a multidisciplinary approach. Group projects, involving more than one student, are warmly encouraged. Obligatory for students completing the Intermediate Level of North American Studies. Contact the Program Coordinator Electives (4 or 8 op each) Taught Classes, Autumn Semester 2006 20th-Century Canadian Writing in English Lecture course during First Quarter, 3 hours/week + required reading. Graded by examination (4 op) Optional additional term paper (4 op) on a topic to be negotiated with the lecturer and done during Second Quarter. Covers the major Canadian fiction authors writing in English Keith Battarbee, English (Juslenia) Mondays 09-12 (3 hours/week), lecture room XXVII (Juslenia) (Mon 4.9.) Mon 11.9. - Mon 16.10. (teaching during SL-1/Quarter 1 only) The African-American Image in American Films Lecture course, with movies, 3 hours/week. (?2+2 op) Pirkka Kivenheimo, Cultural History/Turun Sanomat Mondays 16-20, lecture room XV (Sciences Building, 4th floor) Starting Mon 11.9. in the Quantum Auditorium Note: The third and final opportunity to take the exam for this class in on Friday 16.2.2007, 14:00-17:00 in ls. IX; Registration (using the standard brown exam envelope) to Kirsi Tuohela, Department of Cultural History, Sirkkala campus, by 6.2.2007. Taught Classes, Spring Semester 2007 The Making of Canada Keith Battarbee PhD Class with required reading, graded by examination (4 op) + term paper or additional book examination (4 op) This class is obligatory for students taking North American Studies to Intermediate level, but may also be used as a Basics elective for students completing only the Basic Studies level. Open to exchange students. Wednesdays 16-18, starting 10.1. in lecture room IV, thereafter in room II. Seminar: Topics in American Studies (8 op) Ellen Valle FT This class is designed to follow on from the Introduction to American Society. International students who have already completed similar work at another university may also apply to attend this class, but should please consult Dr Valle (ellen.valle[at]utu.fi) before the first meeting. Tuesdays 16-18, lecture room XX. African-American Music (The Cultural History of African-American Music in the United States) Pirkka Kivenheimo MA, Cultural History/Turun Sanomat Course arranged jointly with Cultural History. Open to exchange students. Lecture course, 4 hours/week in 4th quarter or 'KL 2' (2/4 op) Mondays 16-20, starting 5.3., lecture room I (Tauno Nurmela Hall) Also, in some cases students can get credit for attending relevant conferences and seminars and writing reports. Independent Study Modules (“Book Exams”) NOTE: The three modules listed here are regularly available every year by independent study i.e. a “book exam”. Contact the teacher responsible for the exam for a book list.
